Rotherham Abuse Scandal: Two Men Jailed for Decades-Old Rape and Assault

A decades-long investigation into grooming and child sexual abuse in Rotherham, England, has culminated in the sentencing of two men for the rape and assault of a teenage girl. The convictions underscore the enduring impact of Operation Stovewood, a probe into widespread exploitation between 1997 and 2013.

Kessur Ajaib, 44, was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for one count of rape and one count of indecent assault. Mohammed Makhmood, 43, received a seven-year sentence for one count of rape. The sentences were handed down at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday, following a trial that took place in July.

Decades of Silence Broken

The crimes relate to the same victim, who was between 14 and 16 years old at the time of the offenses. The court heard harrowing details of Makhmood’s behavior following the rape, including verbal abuse, spitting, and laughter directed at the victim. These actions, the judge noted, demonstrated a callous disregard for the young girl’s vulnerability.

The case unfolded alongside the conviction of a third man, Sageer Hussain, who was found guilty of raping a different victim, approximately 14 years old at the time. Hussain, who committed the crime while also 14, received a three-year jail sentence last month at Sheffield Crown Court.

Operation Stovewood Uncovers Systemic Abuse

The convictions are a direct result of Operation Stovewood, launched by the National Crime Agency (NCA) to investigate allegations of widespread grooming and sexual abuse in Rotherham. The operation has brought to light a disturbing pattern of exploitation that affected numerous young women in the area.

The victim in this case bravely came forward to testify against her abusers. A statement read by the prosecution barrister revealed the profound and lasting trauma she endured. “For years I didn’t know I was being abused because it was happening to so many other girls around me,” she stated. She described years spent in denial, burdened by self-blame and familial guilt.

A Victim’s Testimony: “Treated Like a Sex Commodity”

The victim’s statement detailed the intense fear, embarrassment, shame, and heartache she experienced as a result of the abuse. She poignantly described herself as a “brainwashed and vulnerable girl who was treated like a sex commodity.” The judge acknowledged the devastating impact of the crimes, describing the victim’s experiences as “tragic.”

According to reports from Sky News North of England correspondent, Fraser Maude, the victim was present in court to witness the sentencing. The judge emphasized that the pair had deliberately exploited the young girl’s vulnerability.

These convictions represent a significant step toward justice for survivors of abuse in Rotherham, and a stark reminder of the long-term consequences of child sexual exploitation.
