Royce Keys WrestleMania 42 Status: Update on WWE Plans

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

The evolving storyline between WWE Superstar Kit Wilson and Grammy Award-winning musician Jelly Roll continues to captivate wrestling fans, but a potential addition to the narrative – Royce Keys – appears to have been sidelined, at least for now. Whereas Keys was previously discussed as a possible component of a WrestleMania 42 tag team match involving Jelly Roll, current indications suggest those plans have shifted.

The initial connection between Wilson and Jelly Roll began gaining traction in recent weeks, culminating in a confrontation on “WWE SmackDown.” The possibility of expanding the angle to include Keys, formerly known as Powerhouse Hobbs in All Elite Wrestling (AEW), generated speculation among wrestling observers. However, journalist Dave Meltzer reported on “Wrestling Observer Radio” that Keys is no longer factored into the immediate plans for the storyline.

Shifting Plans for WrestleMania 42

Meltzer stated, “I kind of wonder where they’re going with Jelly Roll, if they’re going to turn that into [something]. It just feels to me they’re going to build some gimmick match with him and Kit Wilson and maybe a tag [match] with Miz due to the fact that The Miz has been involved in the storyline. They could do that. I had asked about the story because there was a story about Royce Keys, and I was told that it’s not Royce Keys, for whatever that’s worth.” He added that while he wasn’t explicitly told of a match involving Jelly Roll, the current trajectory strongly suggests WWE is building towards a showdown at WrestleMania 42.

The change in direction regarding Keys’ involvement comes after a relatively quick introduction to the WWE landscape. Keys debuted as a surprise entrant in the 2026 Men’s Royal Rumble in January, marking a significant shift after his departure from AEW in mid-January. His Royal Rumble appearance signaled WWE’s intent to utilize his considerable physical presence.

Keys’ Role Following the Royal Rumble

Since his debut, Keys has participated in a series of dark matches against talent from the “SmackDown” brand, according to reports. He also appeared as a guest on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story” podcast, offering a platform to connect with fans and share his background. However, despite these appearances, Keys has yet to be featured in a televised match under his new moniker, leaving his immediate future within the company somewhat uncertain. His lack of television time following the Royal Rumble has fueled speculation about his creative direction.

The decision to potentially exclude Keys from the Jelly Roll storyline doesn’t necessarily indicate a long-term shelving of the wrestler. WWE often adjusts plans based on creative considerations and evolving audience reactions. It’s possible Keys will be integrated into a different angle in the coming weeks, allowing the company to capitalize on his athleticism and presence.

The Jelly Roll and Miz Dynamic

Currently, the focus appears to be on developing the dynamic between Jelly Roll, Kit Wilson, and The Miz. Last week’s “SmackDown” episode saw Jelly Roll directly confront both Wilson and The Miz, culminating in a physical altercation where “The A-Lister” was punched in the face. This incident further escalated the tension and set the stage for Wilson’s scheduled call-out of Jelly Roll on this week’s episode of “SmackDown.” The ongoing feud has quickly grow a focal point of the WWE’s programming.

The involvement of a mainstream celebrity like Jelly Roll presents both opportunities and challenges for WWE. Successfully integrating a non-wrestling personality requires careful storytelling and a compelling narrative. The company seems to be leaning towards a gimmick match or a tag team bout, potentially involving The Miz, to capitalize on the unique situation.

As WrestleMania 42 approaches, the direction of the Jelly Roll storyline remains fluid. While Royce Keys’ involvement appears to be on hold, the potential for unexpected twists and turns is always present in the world of professional wrestling. Fans will be watching closely to see how WWE ultimately utilizes these personalities and builds towards a memorable event in April.

WWE’s next scheduled premium live event is Night of Champions, though its status is currently uncertain amid regional concerns, according to Ringside News. Further updates regarding the Jelly Roll storyline and the potential WrestleMania 42 matches are expected on upcoming episodes of “SmackDown” and “Raw.”
