A strong opening round at the RSM Classic has revitalized Seamus Power’s quest to secure full PGA Tour status for the 2026 season, as the Irish golfer navigates a crucial final week of competition. Power’s performance in Georgia comes as he battles to improve his position in the FedEx Fall standings and retain his tour card.
Power’s Opening Round and Season Outlook
Seamus Power fired a six-under-par 64 on Thursday at the season-ending RSM Classic, positioning himself well in the field and injecting momentum into his late-season push. The waterford native currently sits in 129th place in the FedEx Fall standings, a precarious position as onyl the top 100 players will secure full PGA Tour status for next year, while those finishing between 101 and 125 will gain conditional status.
The tournament is uniquely played across two courses at the South Sea Island Resort.power began his campaign on the par-70 Seaside Course, carding seven birdies against a single bogey on the 10th hole, leaving him tied for 15th place after the first round. He finished as the fifth-best performer on the Seaside Course.
Ghim Sets the Pace at Sea Island
Doug Ghim currently leads the tournament after an impressive 10-under-par 60, setting a high bar for the rest of the field. Ghim shares the lead with Davis Thompson and Rico Hoey, both of whom posted rounds of 62 on the Plantation Course.
Close behind are Andrew Puttnam and Andrew Novak, who are one stroke back at nine-under after recording rounds of 61 on the Seaside Course.A full leaderboard is available for detailed scoring updates.
A Season of Resilience for the Irish Golfer
Thursday’s performance represents a positive continuation of Power’s recent form, despite a challenging season marked by injury setbacks. He secured only one top-10 finish this year, achieving eighth place at the Valspar Championship in March.
Power has demonstrated flashes of brilliance in recent weeks, performing strongly in both mexico and Bermuda. However, he has been hampered by inconsistent final rounds, most recently at the Bermuda Championship, where a closing 73 saw him slip from contention to an 11th-place finish.”He’s shown the ability to compete at a high level, but consistency has been the key,” noted one analyst.
Power will need to maintain this momentum throughout the remainder of the RSM Classic to secure his desired tour status and ensure continued success on the PGA Tour.
