NECEDAH, Wis. — For three days, Chesney the kangaroo captivated a small Wisconsin town, hopping through fields and wooded areas after a surprising escape from his enclosure. The 16-month-old marsupial, named after country music star Kenny Chesney, is now safely back at Sunshine Farm, a local petting zoo, thanks to a community-wide search effort and a little help from his favorite treats. The incident highlights the unexpected challenges of caring for exotic animals and the remarkable way communities can rally together.
The escape unfolded last Wednesday around 11:15 a.m. At Sunshine Farm in Necedah, Wisconsin, a town approximately 160 miles northwest of Milwaukee. According to farm owner Debbie Marland, Chesney was spooked by a group of stray dogs that approached his enclosure, allowing him to clear the 8-foot fence. “It was a bit of a shock, to say the least,” Marland said. “We’ve never had a kangaroo make a break for it before.”
The initial hours were filled with frantic searching. Marland, along with friends and volunteers, began tracking reported sightings, covering significant ground each day. “I was putting on about 37,000 steps per day looking for him,” Marland recounted. “I haven’t done so much exercise in a very long time.” The search even incorporated technology, with volunteers renting heat-seeking drones to help narrow down Chesney’s location. The drones proved useful in identifying areas where the kangaroo had recently been, but Chesney’s speed – kangaroos can reach speeds of up to 32 miles per hour – made him a difficult target.
A Community Mobilizes
As the search stretched into Friday, concerns grew. Stacy Brereton, a friend who assists at the farm, described a particularly anxious day. “No one had spotted Chesney all day, and we feared he had wandered farther afield into unfamiliar territory,” she said. That evening, however, a glimmer of hope emerged. Chesney was discovered nestled under a tree in a wooded area near the farm.
Despite being surrounded by searchers, Chesney’s agility allowed him to evade capture. “He’s incredibly quick,” Marland explained. Determined to bring him home safely, Marland returned Saturday morning armed with Chesney’s favorite treats and items carrying the scent of his companion, Kenny – another kangaroo who resides at the farm.
As the search party began to pack up, defeated, Chesney unexpectedly approached. Brereton, who played a key role in the final capture, described the moment. “He had a very calm attitude when he walked up. Obviously, you could tell he wasn’t in fight-or-flight mode, so I just went with that,” she said. “I just stayed calm with him and I just kind of went and sat and let him come to me.” Brereton was then able to gently scoop up the 40-pound kangaroo.
Sunshine Farm and a Growing Fanbase
Sunshine Farm, which typically operates Fridays through Sundays from mid-May to mid-November, offers visitors the chance to interact with a variety of animals, including horses, sheep, alpacas, Kunekune pigs, Highland cows, and a Bactrian camel. A fan of the farm has even begun writing a children’s book about Chesney’s adventure, with Marland hoping to publish it to help offset the costs associated with the search.
Chesney and Kenny, both named after the country music star Kenny Chesney, typically enjoy the run of Marland’s house. After his ordeal, Chesney was reported to be hungry and tired but otherwise healthy. He is scheduled for a checkup with a veterinarian as a precaution.
Marland confirmed that a new, more secure mesh top will be installed over the kangaroo enclosure to prevent future escapes. The incident has likewise highlighted the importance of community support. “The community really did come together for Chesney,” Marland said. “He’s become something of a celebrity.”

Sunshine Farm is expected to resume its normal operating schedule soon. Marland plans to share updates on Chesney’s well-being and the progress of the children’s book on the farm’s social media channels. The farm is also reviewing its animal containment protocols to ensure the safety of all its residents.
