Last night, a bomb fell by mistake on the Russian city of Belgorod. The projectile detached from an Su-34 military plane and caused a crater 20 by 5 meters in diameter. It caused damage to roads, cars and power line poles. It fell a few dozen meters from a block of flats, which had to be evacuated.

As a result of the explosion, three people were injured and one had to be hospitalized. The power of the shock wave hurled a vehicle onto the roof of a nearby building.

Belgorod lies 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and at first what happened was attributed to a Ukrainian attack. Later, the Russian Defense Ministry had to admit that it was due to a mistake and that the explosion was caused by a shell from a Kremlin fighter plane.

“On April 20, 2023, at approximately 10:15 p.m. Moscow time, during a flight of the Su-34 aircraft of the Aerospace Forces over the city of Belgorodan abnormal launch of an aviation ammunition took place,” he said in a note, advancing that an investigation will be opened.

Ukraine: “It will happen again”

This Friday, Ukraine has attributed what happened to poor condition of russian ammunition and has predicted that there will be more similar cases due to the desire of the Kremlin to rapidly increase its production at the expense of quality.

Bombs like the one in Belgorod “could also fall in other places” because the Russians “do everything quickly,” Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat told television. “And where things are done with haste and carelessnessthese types of incidents will occur more often“, he pointed out.

The bomb, according to Ukraine, has been part of the Russian arsenal since Soviet times, but needs modernization, the installation of GPS navigation and wings. In his opinion, Russia will increasingly resort to this type of projectiles.
