The two drones were “destroyed with the weapons of the Russian ship at a distance of 1,000 and 800 meters,” said the Russian Ministry of Defense, which specified that the patrol boat “Sergei Kotov” was 370 km southwest of Sevastopol, a large port on the Crimean peninsula.

Naval drones are vessels that operate on the surface of the water, without a crew, directed at a distance. Russia regularly accuses the Ukrainian army of using these devices, as well as aerial drones, to attack targets in the Black Sea.

Ukraine claimed responsibility for a naval drone strike on the Kerch Bridge, a vital infrastructure linking Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula, on July 17.

The Black Sea is the axis of exacerbated tensions after Russia’s withdrawal last week from an international agreement for the export of Ukrainian grains.

Russia and Ukraine have warned ships sailing in the Black Sea that they could be targeted if they headed for enemy ports.
