Russia claims to have thwarted an assassination attempt on Sergey Aksionov, the Russian governor of Crimea.

A man of Russian nationality was detained, as reported by Ukrainian broadcaster Nexta TV. According to the Russian secret services (FSB), the suspect would have been hired by the Ukrainian security forces.

“The assassination attempt on Crimean leader Sergey Aksionov, organized by the Ukrainian special services, was thwarted,” Russia’s TASS news agency reported, quoting an FSB statement. A man was detained as part of the investigation, the Associated Press reported.

According to the same source, the objective was to place a bomb in the victim’s car.

Sergey Aksionov is Moscow’s designated leader in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.
