The move comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the “Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics” as “independent”. Moscow has also sent troops to these areas.
Brent crude futures rose about 4% to $ 97.35. This is the highest increase since September 2014. S&P 500 futures fell 2% and Nasdaq futures fell 2.7%.
European stocks also fell 1.3% overnight to a four-month low. The Russian ruble fell, and Russia’s MOEX equity index fell 10.5%. Australia’s ASX 200 followed suit, falling 1.3% in early trade. On Monday, markets in the United States were closed for the holidays.

Ray Adril, head of NAB’s foreign exchange strategy, said, “Under these circumstances, risk measurements are the driving force behind markets.”
In currency trading, the yen rose 0.2% in Asia to 114.50 against the dollar, a three-week high. The euro fell about 0.1% to $ 1.1296 a week. The Russian ruble touched a one-month low of $ 80,289.
Tensions also reduced US Treasury levels. The 10-year Treasury benchmark index was down 5.5 basis points (PP) at 1.8715%.
Meanwhile, the United States has received intelligence that Russian forces have been ordered to prepare for a final offensive in Ukraine. On this basis, US President Biden has said that Russia is ready to infiltrate Russian forces into Ukraine.
