Russian attacks on Ukraine kill five, injure 30 across eight regions

Overnight Russian attacks on Ukraine killed five people and injured 30 others across eight regions, Ukrainian authorities reported on April 25, 2026.

The central city of Dnipro bore the brunt, with more than 20 wounded, including a nine-year-old child and two police officers, according to a Telegram statement from Ukraine’s National Police. Two additional deaths occurred in Nizhyn in the Chernihiv region, while a one-year-old boy was among the wounded in Kharkiv.

Rescue operations were underway in Dnipro as emergency services responded to damage in residential buildings, with similar efforts reported in Chernihiv, Odesa and Kharkiv. Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin confirmed via Telegram that one person was wounded in Sloviansk and another in Kramatorsk, with six homes, five high-rises, a post office and a church similarly damaged.

Ukraine’s Air Force said it tracked 619 Russian drones and 47 missiles launched during the overnight barrage, shooting down or suppressing 610 of them. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on X that Russia’s tactics remain unchanged — relying on drones, cruise and ballistic missiles to strike civilian infrastructure in cities.

The attacks followed the killing of a married couple, both aged 75, in a Russian strike on Odesa’s port city the previous day, which also destroyed residential buildings and hit a foreign ship, Ukrainian officials said.

Meanwhile, the European Union approved a new round of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy, banking and trade sectors after weeks of delay caused by Hungarian opposition. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged expedited action, telling reporters in Cyprus that the bloc is “really pushing” for the package.

Zelenskyy called on European leaders to accelerate sanctions approval, arguing that the pause caused by Hungary’s block on the 20th sanctions package gave Russia time to adapt its tactics.

Why did the EU delay approving the latest sanctions package?

The EU’s approval was stalled due to opposition from Hungary, which blocked consensus needed for the 20th sanctions package, according to the source.
