Russia today attacked an underground gas storage facility in Ukraine in another wave of missile attacks on energy facilities in the country, the Ukrainian state energy company Naftogaz said, as quoted by Reuters and BTA. Gas supplies to consumers were not affected, the company added.

The executive director of “Naftogaz” Oleksiy Chernishov announced that equipment was damaged during the strike on an underground gas storage facility and that repair work is ongoing.

“The situation will not have a critical impact on the operation of the underground gas storage, as the gas is stored deep underground,” wrote Chernishov on Facebook. “Damaged infrastructure on the surface needs repair, but we have enough spare capacity to mitigate any immediate impacts,” he added.

Ukraine’s energy ministry and energy operators said today Ukraine increased electricity imports and halted exports, following a series of Russian attacks in recent days that saw top power producer DTEK lose 50% of its capacity.

“For the current day, the import of electricity is expected to amount to 14,900 megawatt hours. No export is foreseen,” said a statement issued today by the Ministry of Energy.

Russia attacked Ukrainian power generation and transmission facilities on Friday, causing significant power outages in many regions, and power facilities in three Ukrainian regions were also hit this morning, Reuters recalled.

The day before the March 22 attack, Ukraine imported 3,300 megawatt hours and exported 2,148 megawatt hours.

“The losses (from Friday’s attack) have already been assessed, and we can officially release the information that DTEK has lost 50% of its production capacity,” Sergiy Kovalenko, head of the Yasno distribution company, said on national television. He did not disclose further details.
