Offensive in Donetsk region
Updated on July 4, 2024, 5:24 am
Again people are dying in Russian airstrikes in Ukraine, and again President Zelensky is asking for more help to protect his countrymen. Meanwhile, Russia is carrying out massive offensives in the Donetsk region – using an ancient tactic.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is asking his allies to provide his country with more anti-aircraft systems. He referred to the recent Russian rocket attack on the city of Dnipro, which killed five people and injured over 50 others. Residential buildings and a hospital are also said to have been damaged.
“There were also rocket attacks on our other regions, guided bombs on Kharkiv and our front lines,” Zelensky said in his video address yesterday evening. According to information from Ukraine, 14 people were injured in the attack on a suburb of Kharkiv.
To defend against these attacks, his country’s army needs more weapons, Zelensky said. “We can stop all this only with more air defense systems, only with more long-range attacks on the bases and air bases of Russian terrorists.”
An agreement is expected at the NATO summit
Four Patriot anti-aircraft systems are currently in use in Ukraine. Two of them were supplied from Germany. Zelenskyj recently estimated his country’s additional needs for at least six more Patriot systems. Ukraine hopes that a decision on this will be made at the NATO summit next week.
The president of Ukraine has also repeatedly asked for permission from the allies to use Western-supplied weapons against targets deep inside Russian territory – against military airports for example. “We are actively discussing all this with our partners at all levels,” said the head of state.

Until now, the Ukrainian military has only been allowed to use heavy weapons in the frontline area and east of Kharkiv in the border area with Russia because the allies are worried about excessive involvement in the war with Russia. In carrying out attacks deep in the Russian hinterland, Ukraine uses drones that do not have as much explosive power as cruise missiles or rockets.
Heavy fighting near Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine
The area around the city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine in the Donetsk region is currently the focus of the frontline events. According to the 47th Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine deployed there, Russian troops are trying to break through the Ukrainian defense lines. The Russian military relies mainly on mass infantry attacks supported by combat drones, brigade spokeswoman Anastasija Blischchik said on television.
“We hardly saw any armored vehicles on the battlefield for at least a month, since [den Russen] These weapons are obsolete,” Blischchik said. Reconnaissance drones showed “huge cemeteries” of destroyed armored vehicles. That’s why the Russian side wants to dominate the fight with strong infantry forces.
According to the General Staff in Kiev, the Russian military wants to increase the “number of hits” in the region around Pokrovsk. Accordingly, the defensive lines would be strengthened and more ammunition would be brought to this part of the front.
