The party “Russian Union of Latvia” (RSL) appealed to the President of the Republic, Egils Levits, with an appeal not to approve the legislative ban on the use of St. George’s ribbons at public events. This became known on Tuesday, November 16.

The union stressed that the amendments in Riga may aggravate the already tense situation in society, violate the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly, processions and pickets, as well as trigger a number of lawsuits, within which it will be very difficult for the state to prove its case.
Party members express the hope that the president’s legal past will not allow him to sign “potentially undesirable amendments for the country.”
On November 11, the Latvian parliament in the third final reading approved legislative amendments providing for the introduction of a ban on the use of St. George’s ribbons during public events, both entertainment and festive, as well as meetings, processions and pickets.
On the same day, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called the ban on St. George’s ribbons in Latvia a reincarnation of fascism.
