From Heartache too Holiday Cheer: Unexpected Romance Blossoms in a Latvian Hospital

A chance encounter in a hospital foyer has sparked a heartwarming romance, offering a beacon of hope after personal setbacks. Last November, Ruta Froehlich, a familiar face to viewers of teh show The Owner is Looking for a Wife, found herself hospitalized.
A Serendipitous meeting
The connection between Ruta and Zigurd was entirely accidental. According to Ruta, she ventured to the hospital foyer seeking a signal for her phone when Zigurd approached her. “He said, ‘Could I take a picture with the star?'” she recalled. Zigurd, having followed Ruta’s journey on the show with great interest, was delighted to meet the “slinky redhead from Vabole” in person.
The pair quickly established a rapport and began to spend time together during Ruta’s remaining days in the hospital. “I was discharged on November 18th,” ruta explained. “Zigurd brought chocolates and gingerbread. We were alone for an hour before the next patient arrived, and when they came, they even went for a walk to give us privacy.”
From Phone Calls to Christmas Plans
Following Ruta’s discharge, their connection continued through phone calls.In early December, Ruta traveled to the capital for an interview, providing an opportunity for their first meeting outside the hospital walls. “Zigurd was very happy I was going to Riga,” she said. “We agreed to meet in Old Riga and see the Christmas market.” It was during this meeting that Zigurd tentatively suggested celebrating Christmas together at Ruta’s home.Initially hesitant, Ruta, still navigating a recent separation from a younger lover, cautiously declined. “I let new people near me with caution,” she admitted. “But it turned out that way… At that time, I had a lifelong argument with my lover, who was 20 years younger, and then I said to Zigurd: ‘Go!'”
A Gesture of Affection and a Future Together
Zigurd, a widower of three years, had not pursued another relationship until meeting Ruta. He quickly recognized a connection,and those around him seem to agree he’s found a good match. “Zigurd is charming, erudite, solid and polite,” Ruta shared. “His relatives and friends are happy that he has finally met someone. I believe that fate brought us together, it is a gift from above.”
His affection was demonstrated through grand gestures. “When he came to visit, half the car was full of gifts,” Ruta recounted, detailing a bounty of local delicacies including Ķekava’s smoked chicken, Liepkalnu bread, eclairs, gingerbread, honey, candies, strawberry liqueur, and even a personalized mug. In return, Ruta gifted Zigurd a spa retreat in Estonia’s Wagenküll castle for Christmas, a getaway they enjoyed on January 28th and 29th. Their adventures are set to continue this spring with a planned trip to the tulip festival in Holland.
Distance is No Barrier
Despite living approximately 200 kilometers apart, the distance has not diminished their connection. They spent a week together over the Christmas holiday, from December 22nd to 29th. Ruta described Zigurd embracing the simple pleasures of her rural lifestyle, even helping with the wood-burning stove. “As a city dweller, he liked such romance,” she noted. On Christmas Eve, while ruta prepared pies, Zigurd decorated the Christmas tree.
Their Christmas celebrations culminated in a visit to the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Liksna, where they were surprised by a visit from a local Santa Claus distributing gifts to children.
This unexpected romance, born from heartache and a chance encounter, demonstrates that love can blossom in the most unexpected of places, offering a testament to the enduring power of connection and the possibility of finding happiness after loss.
