Three individuals were arrested on Sunday following separate incidents of alleged arson and dangerous driving in regional South Australia, prompting investigations into potential connections and motives. The incidents, occurring in the Riverland and Murray Bridge areas, highlight concerns about public safety and reckless behavior during a period of heightened fire risk.
Riverland Pursuit Ends in Vehicle Fire
A dramatic pursuit unfolded in the Riverland region after police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked near sheds in Kanni. According to police reports, the owners of the property approached a red Subaru sedan when the occupants – a 28-year-old woman from Valley View and a 35-year-old man from Berri – fled “at high speeds through paddocks, driving through fencing” and causing significant damage.
The suspects allegedly attempted to ram the property owners’ vehicle after being followed, executing a “180-degree turn” and driving “directly at the vehicle containing the occupants of the property.” Fortunately, the vehicle “narrowly missed the victims” before heading towards the Sturt Highway.
Patrols attempted to intercept the Subaru near Cobdogla, but the driver “took off from police at speed.” The vehicle was later spotted in Monash around 8 p.m. before veering into the scrub. Following a search, both the woman and the man were apprehended. The Subaru was discovered approximately 500 meters away, engulfed in flames.
Both individuals face charges of property damage and being unlawfully on premises. The man is also charged with failing to stop, driving while disqualified, possessing a controlled drug, and aggravated acts likely to cause harm. He is scheduled to appear in the Berri Magistrates Court.
Fire Crews Targeted in Murray Bridge Arson
Earlier on Sunday, a 51-year-old man was arrested in Murray Bridge after the Country Fire Service (CFS) responded to reports of multiple grass fires along the riverbank. As firefighters worked to extinguish the initial blaze, authorities received information about additional fires being deliberately lit.
Police located and arrested the man after he allegedly attempted to flee the scene. He has been charged with lighting a fire during fire danger season, hindering police, and disorderly behavior. Disturbingly, police also allege the man threw a rock at CFS crews while they were actively fighting the fires. He is expected to appear in the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court.
These incidents underscore the serious consequences of reckless and potentially dangerous behavior, particularly during periods of heightened fire risk. Authorities continue to investigate both cases and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
