Sabadell CEO Steps Down, TSB Leader to Take the Helm

Banco Sabadell announced a significant leadership change today, with CEO César González-Bueno departing and Marc Armengol, currently leading the bank’s British subsidiary TSB, set to replace him.

  • César González-bueno is leaving Banco Sabadell “by mutual agreement.”
  • Marc Armengol, CEO of TSB, will assume the role of CEO at banco Sabadell, likely in May.
  • The transition coincides with the anticipated completion of TSB’s sale to Banco Santander this semester.
  • Banco Sabadell President Josep oliu highlighted González-Bueno’s success in increasing the bank’s value.

The change in leadership is expected to take effect in May, following the bank’s shareholder meeting and necessary approvals from the European Central Bank (BCE). Armengol will remain at TSB until the sale to Banco Santander is finalized within the first half of this year, according to the bank.

González-Bueno’s departure follows the failed takeover bid by BBVA for the catalan-based group. Banco Sabadell President Josep Oliu praised González-Bueno’s contributions, stating that his leadership has resulted in “record historical results” and a more than twelve-fold increase in the bank’s share value over the past five years – the largest revaluation among companies listed on the Ibex and among European banks during that period.

César González-Bueno is stepping down as CEO of Banco Sabadell, to be replaced by Marc Armengol.

“The board of directors decided to bring in González-Bueno for his demonstrated leadership, innovation, and transformation skills,” Oliu remarked, adding that the executive has far exceeded expectations. “He has always put the interests of the bank above his own.”

Oliu also emphasized the selection of Armengol, describing him as an “in-house” candidate who thoroughly understands the bank’s strengths and areas for advancement. “He has a demonstrated ability to lead and manage, and extensive technological experience that will be very useful in this era of disruption,” Oliu added.

Armengol faces several challenges, including maintaining the bank’s capital generation, strengthening commercial dynamics, and driving a new phase of technological transformation. “My priorities will focus on delivering the objectives set for 2026 and 2027, while preparing the bank for the transformation it needs to move to the next level,” he explained.

González-Bueno commented, “We are closing a passionate and successful cycle. It’s time to plant the seeds for the bank’s future, taking advantage of the remarkable transformation opportunities offered by a new leap in technology. Armengol is the best candidate for this exciting challenge.”

Administrative Reorganization Alongside Leadership Shift

Banco Sabadell has also implemented a group-level reorganization alongside the leadership change. Carlos Ventura has been appointed General Manager of Businesses in Spain, adding responsibility for retail banking to his existing roles in corporate banking, network, and private banking. He will also join the corporate governing body as an executive director.

Jorge Rodríguez Maroto will continue as General Manager of Retail and a member of the management committee, reporting directly to ventura. The Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) division will remain unchanged under the leadership of Cristóbal Paredes as General Manager.
