Sabalenka Confident Ahead of ‘Battle of the Sexes’ Match Against Kyrgios in Dubai
The World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is embracing the challenge and predicting victory in her exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios, set to take place Sunday in Dubai.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios are poised to reignite the spirit of a historic rivalry with a unique “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition match at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. the event, echoing the landmark 1973 contest between Billie Jean king and bobby riggs, promises a compelling spectacle with modified rules designed to level the playing field.
The upcoming match will utilize a three-set format with several key adjustments. Both players will be limited to a single serve, and Sabalenka’s side of the court will be reduced in size by nine percent. A decisive 10-point tie-break will be employed if the match reaches a 1-1 set score. These alterations aim to create a competitive and entertaining contest, acknowledging the inherent physical differences between male and female athletes.
When directly asked about the anticipated outcome, Sabalenka, a 27-year-old four-time Grand Slam champion, responded with unwavering confidence: “Me.” She further elaborated on her mindset, stating, “This event is really unpredictable. I don’t know what to expect and that’s what I love because this is the feeling that you chase when you play sport.”
Sabalenka views the match as a significant personal challenge. “I love to challenge myself and this is a huge challenge, especially playing against nick, a guy who is unpredictable and crazy,” she saeid. She also hopes the event will serve as an inspiration, adding, “It’s great training for me and a great message to the girls out there — I hope they will see how strong and tough I am by playing against a guy.”
Kyrgios, currently ranked 673 in the world after a year hampered by injuries – with his most recent setback occurring in March – acknowledges the challenge but remains optimistic. He has been limited to just five singles matches this year. “I’ve seen some pretty scary opponents in my time. I’m well equipped and I know that aryna has got some serious weapons at her disposal,” Kyrgios stated. “But I have come here prepared and ready. If you know me, you know how unpredictable I am, but I’m as well prepared as I possibly could be. I feel like I’m going to win.”
Despite never having secured a Grand Slam title, Kyrgios points to his experience reaching a Grand Slam final as valuable preparation. “I haven’t won a grand Slam but I’ve walked out in a Grand Slam final. This is something fully different, I don’t know how my body or my mind will react,” he admitted. He intends to leverage his signature playing style.”It’s a completely different energy. I’m going to bring something different, without a doubt. My strength has always been my unpredictability, even on the men’s tour.”
Kyrgios believes his unconventional approach has troubled even the sport’s elite. “Guys like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have struggled with not understanding how to play me at certain times as even I don’t know what I’m going to do at certain times,” he explained. “I’m going to bring something she hasn’t seen before. I’ll play the style of tennis that I know is effective.”
