Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino is making his transition from the silver screen to the stage with The Popinjay Cavalier, a production set in 1830s Europe. The filmmaker, best known for cinematic milestones including Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, first revealed his theatrical writing ambitions on a podcast in 2025, noting that the script was fully completed and would occupy a chapter of his career.

The project arrives in the West End following a path that brought together film and theatrical heavyweights. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions are co-producing the run. The production draws creative inspiration from classic Hollywood swashbuckler traditions, specifically referencing the historical writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr.

“Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first ‘motherfucker’. When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions. I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together. I have made him promise not to be gentle.”

The partnership brings together two figures from modern entertainment. Producers Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, and Sonia Friedman praised the casting decision in a joint statement, calling Baron Cohen a fearless, brilliantly inventive actor with the wit, mischief and daring this role demands.

The executive leadership added that observing the filmmaker inside a rehearsal room working alongside actors, musicians, acrobats, and fencers has been an experience.
