Saint Francis Field Hockey Secures Historic 11th Win, Driven by Marciano’s Dominance

A remarkable season for Saint Francis University Field Hockey reached another milestone today with their 11th victory – a feat not accomplished since 2016. The team’s winning streak has now extended to eight consecutive games, tying a program record set in 2014.

Overtime Thriller Seals Victory

In a tightly contested match that went into overtime, it was Sofia Marciano, a sophomore midfielder, who delivered the decisive blow. Marciano found the back of the cage for her second goal of the afternoon, securing the win for Saint Francis and etching her name further into the program’s record books.

“As if anyone was surprised,” one observer noted, highlighting Marciano’s consistent impact on the team’s success. With this goal, Marciano now ranks third in Saint Francis history for most goals in a single season, equaling the record held by Autumn Pellman. She is also only the second player in team history to reach 13 goals in a single season.

Key Moments Fuel Red Flash Comeback

The initial period saw a relatively quiet start for the Red Flash, but momentum shifted in the second quarter when Brooklyn Widdess, a junior midfielder, scored her third goal of the season. Although the opposition quickly responded, Saint Francis emerged from halftime with renewed energy.

The game-winning play was a testament to team collaboration, with Cruz Cánepa, a sophomore midfielder, earning her tenth assist of the year by playing a critical role in the connection to Marciano.

Coaching Milestone and Program Records Fall

Today’s victory marks a significant achievement for head coach Mackenzie Allessie, who has now reached 11 wins – the first time in her career. This accomplishment also makes her only the second head coach in program history to surpass the 10-win mark.

The team’s current eight-game winning streak is a testament to their dedication and skill, matching the program record established in 2014 under the leadership of head coach Stacey Bean.

Looking Ahead: Final Home Series

Saint Francis will return to Loretto this weekend for their final home series of the 2025 campaign. The first match is scheduled against Sacred Heart at 3 p.m. within DeGol Field.
