José Moreau was beatified on February 19, 1984 by Saint John Paul II, within the group of the ’99 martyrs of the diocese of Angers’. That day, after praying the Angelus, the Holy Father said:
«Today I have had the joy of elevating to the honor of the altars a large group of new Blesseds, martyrs: 99 of them belong to the diocese of Western France and suffered martyrdom in Angers: during the French Revolution they accepted death to preserve “his faith and his religion” and to express his adherence to the Roman Catholic Church; They were priests, nuns, men and, for the most part, women. “They knew how to follow Christ along the painful path of the cross.”
The martyr who completed the hundred that day was Juan Bautista Mazzucconi, murdered in Oceania, in 1855.
