Kirkland passed away at 1:50 AM PST, according to her representative, Michael greenetells TMZ, who stated she will be “deeply missed.” The heartbreaking loss comes shortly after the actress entered hospice care at a hospital in Palm Springs over the weekend.
She had been living with dementia for the past year, and recently suffered injuries to her ribs and foot after a fall in the shower, as detailed on her GoFundMe page.
Born in New York City in 1941, Kirkland came from a prominent family; her mother, Sally Kirkland Sr., was a fashion editor at Vogue, and her father, Fredric M.Kirkland, was a metals dealer. She received her formal training at the American Academy of dramatic Arts, laying the foundation for a prolific career.
Kirkland first gained public attention in 1964 as one of Andy Warhol’s “13 Most Beautiful Women.” She further distinguished herself in 1968 by becoming the first actress to perform completely nude on stage in an off-Broadway production, “Sweet Eros,” a move that cemented her reputation as a fearless performer.
Her breakthrough role arrived nearly two decades later, in 1987, with her critically acclaimed performance in the comedy-drama “Anna.” This role earned her a Golden Globe award and an Academy Award nomination, solidifying her status as a leading actress.
