Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold experienced a particularly sweet victory following the team’s 29-13 triumph over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Sunday, adding an additional $1 million to his already substantial earnings for the season. Darnold, 28, entered the NFL with immense expectations as the No. 3 overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL draft. However, his tenure in New York did not yield the anticipated results. He was subsequently traded to the Carolina Panthers, where he spent two seasons before taking on a backup role with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023.
A pivotal moment arrived when Darnold secured a starting position with the Minnesota Vikings ahead of the 2024 campaign. While demonstrating flashes of brilliance, he faced inconsistency, ultimately leading to the Vikings’ defeat against the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
A Lucrative Deal and Playoff Performance
Prior to the 2025 season, Darnold signed a three-year, $100.5 million contract as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks. The investment proved fruitful, as he achieved a career-high 67.7% pass completion rate for 4,048 yards and 25 touchdowns, alongside 14 interceptions.
Darnold’s efficiency continued throughout Seattle’s playoff run. He threw for 470 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 8.9 yards per attempt, and completed 69.8% of his passes across his first three postseason games. In Sunday’s Super Bowl victory, he completed 19 of 38 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown, crucially avoiding any interceptions.
