A remarkable comeback story unfolded on Tuesday as Sam Kerr ended a grueling 692-day wait to start a match for Chelsea, celebrating the occasion with two goals in a dominant 6-0 Champions League victory over St. Polten. The Australian forward’s return to the starting lineup marks a notable milestone after a devastating injury derailed her career in early 2024.
Kerr’s momentum had been building after finding the back of the net in Chelsea’s 3-1 Champions League win against BK Hacken on December 20, 2023, but an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during a January 2024 training camp brought her progress to a halt. Multiple setbacks followed, keeping her sidelined until September of this year. Prior to Tuesday’s match, Kerr had made nine substitute appearances this season, scoring twice.
“It feels good. It felt like I had to work myself into it but yeah, happy to score,” Kerr shared with Disney+ following the match. “Of course, I prefer to play more minutes. When you come on for 20 minutes it’s a bit hectic, there’s lots of subs and it can be a bit wishy-washy.I feel like today was good.” She emphasized her enjoyment of being back in the Champions League, stating,”I’m relishing every moment.”
A Slow Burn to Rediscovery
Despite her return to the starting eleven, Kerr initially faced challenges finding her rhythm. Having started two friendlies for Australia last month, her sharpness was still developing, and she missed several opportunities in the first half. A wayward finish early in the second half and a poorly timed run that led to a disallowed goal for teammate Naomi Girma highlighted a frustrating start to the evening.
However, the Kerr that european defenders feared had returned.A stunning first touch from a Wieke Kaptein cross allowed her to create space before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike that left goalkeeper Carina Schluter with no chance. Her second goal showcased her smart movement, dropping off the defensive line to meet a Niamh Charles cross with a perfectly placed header.
“It feels a bit sweeter but it feels a bit wierd,” Kerr admitted, reflecting on the altered feeling of scoring after such a lengthy absence.”I didn’t score for so long that I was like I haven’t celebrated, really. I haven’t got that festivity thing yet. I’ve got to score a few more.”
Eyes on a WSL Return
Kerr is now setting her sights on securing a starting position in the Women’s Super League (WSL), with her last start coming on December 17, 2023.The potential possibility could arise this Sunday against Liverpool, notably with Aggie Beever-Jones sidelined due to a dead leg for the past two games.
“I feel 100% but I was out for a while, so I have to build myself up,” Kerr stated. “Today was a good set, right? Getting some good minutes in the national team was a good set. I’m definitely fit enough, it’s just about getting miles in the legs now. I’m ready to go.”
