For years, my preference in smartphones has been simple: smaller is better. As a former software engineer, I’ve always valued efficiency over excess, which is why I’ve spent my own money on compact devices like the Galaxy S25 Edge and the iPhone Air. I haven’t used a “Max” or “Ultra” model as my daily driver in a long time, largely because the trade-off—a bulky chassis for a slightly larger screen—rarely felt justified.
Still, after spending several weeks testing the Galaxy S26 and the Galaxy S26 Ultra side-by-side, my perspective has shifted. While both devices share the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and One UI 8.5, they are effectively polar opposites in terms of value and longevity. For the first time in the series’ history, the gap between the base model and the top-tier flagship is not just about size; it is about a fundamental difference in hardware quality.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is not a cheap investment, retailing at $1,300. But when compared to the base model, it becomes clear that the Ultra is the only device in the 2026 lineup that truly justifies its price tag. In a year where the base and Plus models saw price increases, the Ultra remained stable while receiving the lion’s share of the innovation.
A display that solves a real-world problem
Usually, a larger screen is a burden. It makes reaching the corners of the display a chore and makes the phone a struggle to fit into a pocket. However, Samsung has managed to make the S26 Ultra surprisingly wieldable. Despite the 6.9-inch screen, the device is only 7.9mm thick and weighs 214 grams, making it thinner and lighter than both the Pixel 10 Pro XL and the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
But the real reason the Galaxy S26 vs S26 Ultra worth it debate leans toward the flagship is the Flex Magic Pixel OLED panel. This technology enables the new Privacy Display feature, which allows users to obscure their screen from prying eyes at the press of a button. Whether on public transit or in a crowded stadium, the ability to toggle privacy without a permanent, third-party screen protector is a genuine quality-of-life improvement.

There is a technical trade-off to this innovation. The Flex Magic Pixel panel exhibits slightly worse off-angle brightness and overall sharpness compared to traditional OLEDs. In side-by-side testing, the standard S26 often appeared brighter, even when the Ultra’s privacy mode was disabled. For most users, however, this difference is negligible compared to the utility of the privacy toggle.
The hidden cost of “budget” flagships
On a spec sheet, the base Galaxy S26 looks competent. In reality, it is riddled with puzzling downgrades that make it a risky purchase for someone planning to keep their phone for several years. While Samsung promises seven years of software support, the base S26 lacks the hardware foundation to survive that timeline.
The most glaring omissions are in connectivity. Samsung removed the mmWave 5G antenna this year—a feature that was present in the S25. The base model lacks an ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, which is essential for precision finding of trackers and accessories, and it is the only model in the series that remains on Bluetooth 5.4 instead of upgrading to Bluetooth 6.
The display is another area of concern. The S26 uses an FHD+ panel, meaning it lacks the QHD+ resolution of its siblings. This doesn’t just affect pixels; it eliminates support for ProScaler, the AI-driven feature used to upscale visual content. While it shares the same processor as the Ultra in North American markets, it lacks the redesigned, larger vapor chamber. This means the S26 can handle short bursts of power, but it cannot sustain high performance as effectively as the Ultra during intensive tasks.

Stagnant cameras vs. Structural innovation
The camera situation is perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the base S26. Samsung has essentially frozen the hardware for the non-Ultra models. The Galaxy S26 uses the same rear camera system as the Galaxy S22: a 50MP main sensor, a 10MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultrawide lens.

While computational photography and new image signal processing have improved the output—including a new 24MP photo mode—the 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom is outdated by 2026 standards. It simply cannot compete with the resolution or reach of the best telephoto cameras currently on the market.
In contrast, the S26 Ultra received significant, if quiet, upgrades. While the resolutions remained at 200MP for the primary and 50MP for the telephoto, Samsung implemented wider apertures and an All Lenses on Prism (ALoP) telephoto design. These changes allow more light into the sensors, resulting in images with significantly more detail and better low-light performance.

The charging gap
Battery life and charging are where the daily experience diverges most sharply. The base S26 is equipped with a 4,300mAh battery and is limited to 25W wired charging. In practice, a 30-minute charge only brings the battery to roughly 55%.
The Ultra model, while still lacking built-in Qi2 magnets, introduces 60W wired charging. This is a game-changer for productivity. Testing shows the S26 Ultra can charge from zero to full in approximately 42 minutes. Being able to plug in for a short break and return to a nearly full battery transforms how you interact with the device, especially since the 5,000mAh cell naturally lasts longer than the base model’s smaller battery.

The value paradox
It is a strange reality that the most expensive phone in the lineup is also the best value. This year, the base Galaxy S26 and the S26 Plus both saw price increases of $100. The Ultra, however, maintained its starting price while receiving almost all the meaningful hardware upgrades.
When you consider the seven-year support window, the choice becomes a matter of future-proofing. The base S26 is entering the market with outdated connectivity and camera hardware. It is unlikely to feel like a modern device by 2028, let alone 2033. The Ultra, with its state-of-the-art connectivity and superior cooling, is built to last.
For those who absolutely require a small phone or a lower price point, the current base model is a difficult recommendation. It may be more prudent to wait for the Galaxy S27 series to see if Samsung addresses these hardware stagnation issues.
