samsung Galaxy XR: A $1,799 Challenge to Apple’s Vision Pro, Powered by Google AI

Samsung Electronics has officially entered the extended reality (XR) arena with the Galaxy XR, a new headset poised to disrupt the market with a price tag of $1,799 – roughly half that of Apple’s Vision Pro. The device, unveiled after a decade of internal research and four years of collaborative development with Google and Qualcomm, represents a significant bet on the future of spatial computing and immersive experiences.

The Galaxy XR is the first in a planned lineup of XR devices from Samsung, signaling a long-term commitment to the technology. It combines both virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) capabilities, allowing users to become fully immersed in content like videos on YouTube, games, and photos, while simultaneously interacting with thier surrounding surroundings.A key differentiator is its integration with Google’s Gemini service, which analyzes the user’s surroundings and provides contextual information about real-world objects.

“Google’s entry into the race changes the dynamics of the ecosystem,” noted one analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, adding that the software contribution from Google coudl potentially add $1,000 in value to the device. Google intends for users to fully utilize Gemini’s capabilities through the new headset.

Strategic Partnerships and the “Moohan” Project

Samsung’s commitment to XR extends beyond software. The company has forged partnerships with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to explore the development of lighter, more stylish smart glasses – the next logical step in the evolution of the technology. The project, internally codenamed “Moohan” (meaning “infinity” in Korean), underscores Samsung’s long-term vision for the XR market.

“We thoght long and hard about the best time to launch this product,” a Samsung executive stated during a press briefing in Seoul on Wednesday. “Given the evolving technology and market conditions, we believe the timing is ideal.”

Navigating a Challenging Market Landscape

Despite the excitement surrounding the Galaxy XR, the XR market faces significant headwinds. While many tech leaders see XR as the next major computing platform, the market remains relatively small. gartner projects the global head-mounted display market will grow by just 2.6% this year, reaching $7.27 billion in 2025.

However, lighter, glasses-like AI devices – such as Meta’s Ray-Ban smartglasses – are expected to drive growth. Despite this potential, the broader virtual reality market has experienced three consecutive years of decline, with deliveries projected to fall another 20% in 2025, according to Counterpoint.

AI-powered Value proposition and Competitive Edge

Samsung is attempting to overcome these challenges by bundling the Galaxy XR with a compelling suite of services. Customers purchasing the device this year will receive 12 months of access to Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, Google Play Pass, and other specialized XR content. This value-added package aims to attract early adopters and demonstrate the benefits of the integrated Google AI experience.

The AI-enriched prototype was reportedly ready to launch alongside Apple’s vision Pro in 2024, with Samsung focusing on enhancing existing applications like YouTube, Google Photos, and Google Maps, alongside the creation of entirely new immersive experiences. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip.

A History of XR Innovation

This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into XR. A decade ago, the company launched the Gear VR, a headset that utilized a smartphone as its display, in partnership with Oculus (later acquired by Meta in 2014). The Galaxy XR represents a significant evolution from that initial experiment, leveraging the latest advancements in hardware, software, and artificial intelligence.

“With a potentially more competitive price than Apple’s Vision Pro,Samsung’s Project moohan headset could establish itself as a serious contender in the premium VR segment, notably among businesses,” said Flora Tang,a senior analyst at Counterpoint. The Galaxy XR is the first device to run on Android XR, signaling a new chapter in the evolution of immersive technology.
