Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a redesigned foldable smartphone featuring a “passport-sized” build. Unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22, 2026, the device represents the most significant physical change to Samsung’s book-style phone in years, moving toward a shorter and wider form factor that resembles a Moleskin notebook.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is designed to appeal to a broader audience by tailoring the experience for general tasks such as reading and watching videos, rather than focusing solely on the early adopters and work-centric users Samsung has targeted in the past. It will be available for preorder and hit shelves on Aug. 7.
Design and Physical Specifications
The new device features a 4:3 aspect ratio, which Samsung says is optimized for both horizontal and vertical media. It is the lightest Galaxy Fold device to date, weighing 201 grams. In terms of dimensions, the phone measures 4.5mm when open and 9.7mm when closed. For comparison, this is only slightly thicker than an iPhone 17 Pro Max, which measures 8.75mm.

The Z Fold 8 utilizes two displays: a 5.5-inch cover display for everyday tasks like email and texting, and a 7.6-inch inner display for scrolling and multitasking. The device is available in several colors, including lavender, cream (white), and graphite (blackish silver), with an online-exclusive “pistachio” light green shade.
Hardware and Performance
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. Its battery is 4,800-mAh, supporting 20-watt wireless charging and 45-watt wired charging.

The camera system consists of two 50-megapixel rear cameras, though it lacks a telephoto lens. This makes its camera system slightly inferior to the more productivity-focused Z Fold 8 Ultra. Additionally, the new phones include Google’s Gemini Notebook app, which allows users to analyze files and take actions across various apps through Gemini.
Market Positioning and Pricing
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899. It sits as a “Goldilocks” option between the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which begins at $2,099, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8, which starts at $1,199. While the Z Fold 8 Ultra is marketed for premium performance and productivity, Rachel Roberts, product manager for Samsung America, stated the Z Fold 8 is for those who want to be immersed in content
without productivity concerns.
The increased pricing across the new lineup is attributed to rising component costs, specifically memory chips, which have seen price surges due to supply shortages and high demand from the AI industry.
Competitive Landscape
The launch comes as Apple is expected to release its first foldable iPhone in September 2026. Drew Blackard, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product management, told CNN that Apple’s entry could actually help Samsung’s phones. Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, noted that Apple’s entry into the category provides a level of legitimacy
to foldables.
Market analysts from Counterpoint Research expect foldable phone shipments to grow 21% annually in 2026. They estimate Apple will capture 25% of the foldable market in 2026, while Samsung is expected to hold 32%.
