Samsung India Begins Job Cuts, Lays Off Up to 100 Employees

Samsung India has begun cutting jobs in batches, asking 80 to 100 executives to leave its television and home appliance businesses. The restructuring follows mounting pressure on sales margins driven by a more than twofold increase in memory chip prices and a weakening rupee.

The tech major has initiated workforce reductions across its domestic consumer electronics operations starting with director-level officials and team leads at the company’s headquarters, alongside branch and area managers working across regional operating branches. According to industry reports, termination letters have been issued in small batches over recent days, with impacted personnel asked to depart without serving notice periods.

The Cost Pressures Squeezing Samsung India’s Margins

Behind the corporate restructuring lies a severe convergence of supply chain cost pressures. Memory chip prices have more than doubled, severely squeezing profit margins for electronics manufacturers. At the same time, the Indian rupee depreciated by nearly 10% through fiscal year 2026, pushing up the landed costs of smartphones and electronic imports before stabilizing somewhat.

Consumer demand has simultaneously softened across the broader market. Industry estimates indicate that smartphone volumes in India declined by 11 to 12 per cent year-on-year. Mobile phones historically account for approximately three-fourths of Samsung’s local revenue, creating an acute vulnerability when handset volumes contract alongside rising component expenses.

Why the Smartphone Division Remains Spared for Now

While television and home appliance management layers face immediate downsizing, the much larger mobile phone sales organisation has been insulated from the current round of layoffs. Executives note that because smartphones represent the company’s bread and butter in the region, leadership opted to protect the division while anticipating a retail rebound during the festive season particularly around Diwali.

That insulation may be temporary. Market data shows Samsung’s competitive standing in domestic mobile sales shifting. According to figures from Counterpoint Research and IDC, Samsung held roughly 17.6% and 16.4% of India’s smartphone market respectively in the second quarter of 2026, slipping to third place behind Vivo and Oppo in a fiercely contested market segment.

Branch Mergers and Wider Workforce Implications

The workforce reduction is accompanied by structural consolidation across Samsung’s regional footprint.

The domestic electronics sales and marketing organisation comprises roughly 550 to 600 executives, operating separately from the dedicated mobile sales force. Industry insiders indicate that the broader rationalization program could eventually reach much further into the corporate structure.

For employees exiting in the initial phase, Samsung is providing a severance package consisting of three months of salary plus an additional month’s pay for every completed year of service.

Strong FY25 Financials Contrast With Operational Realities

The cuts arrive despite a robust financial showing in the preceding fiscal year.

This divergence between high annual profitability and sudden targeted layoffs underscores how rapidly rising component input costs and currency shifts can alter operating margins. Observers note that the structural changes reflect an effort to trim overhead in slower-growth segments while preserving resources for core lines.

What Lies Ahead After the Festive Season

Uncertainty remains high for remaining staff as executive leadership evaluates retail performance heading into the final quarters.

Whether additional job losses materialize will depend heavily on consumer uptake during upcoming autumn celebrations. Industry executives have warned that a second round of workforce rationalization could happen after Diwali across the home appliance and television divisions, while the mobile division’s staffing outlook remains subject to post-festival performance evaluations.
