Canadiens’ Samuel Blais: A Swift Return to the NHL is imminent
The Montreal Canadiens appear poised to recall forward Samuel Blais from the american Hockey League, a move many observers believe is long overdue given his recent performance and the team’s needs.
The Canadiens made a shrewd acquisition last summer, signing the Quebecois forward to a one-year, minimum-salary contract. As one source noted, Blais “could only help the Habs (or the Rocket).” Though, a subsequent decision by General Manager Kent Hughes to place Blais on waivers at the end of practice proved to be a misstep, especially considering the potential for injuries within the Canadiens’ forward ranks – including players like Laine, Dach, and Guhle. Fortunately, that decision was rectified last week when the team claimed Blais off waivers.
Initially, Hughes assigned Blais to the Laval Rocket, the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, due to their proximity while the main club was on a road trip in the American West. This was considered the correct course of action at the time.However, Blais’s dominant performance in two recent AHL games – coupled with the inconsistent play of other forwards – has dramatically shifted the narrative.
In those two games this past weekend, Blais registered an notable two goals, two assists, and a plus-5 rating. “Without Samuel Blais, the Rocket wouldn’t have won either of their weekend games,” one analyst stated, highlighting his immediate impact. The Rocket secured victories against Hershey and Lehigh Valley, both teams boasting winning records exceeding .600 this season, even requiring a shootout to clinch Friday’s win.
Blais brings a multifaceted skillset to the ice. He is known for his physicality, offensive production (having previously recorded three points in eight games with the Toronto Maple Leafs), experience, and imposing size – standing at 6’2″ and weighing over 200 pounds. Beyond his on-ice abilities,he is a local player with strong character,making him a fan favorite.
The call-up appears increasingly likely, especially given the recent struggles of Florian Xhekaj and the limited playing time jared Davidson has received since Alexandre Texier’s arrival. Beyond Blais’s individual performance, the Canadiens’ playoff prospects are currently precarious. As of today, November 28th, thay are the only Canadian team positioned to qualify for the postseason, currently holding third place in the Atlantic Division. However, they are just one point above the playoff cut-off line, making their position far from secure. Upcoming games against the Senators and Maple Leafs will be critical tests.
While currently in a playoff position, the Canadiens still require further advancement in terms of talent, grit, experience, and overall health before they can be considered legitimate contenders. “Just because you’re eighth in your association doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready to compete in the playoffs,” a team insider acknowledged.
