On the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the Artsakh national-liberation struggle, the Karabakh movement, Artsakh President Samvel Shahramanyan, accompanied by several Artsakh deputies, the leader of the Artsakh Diocese, His Grace Bishop Abrahamian, visited Yrablur to pay tribute to the memory of the martyrs.

On February 20, 1988, an extraordinary session of the Council of People’s Deputies of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic made a decision, appealing to the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan to withdraw from its composition, and to the Supreme Council of Armenia to include it in its composition, and calling on the USSR to satisfy this request.

Demonstrations in support of Artsakh Armenians also started in Yerevan that day. And the demonstrations became continuous. Rallies with the participation of hundreds of thousands of people began in Yerevan.

And after some time, the rallies and demands for the reunification of Nagorno Karabakh turned into a struggle for the independence of Armenia.

Already at the February 26 rally, the creation of the “Karabakh” committee was announced. The first composition consisted of 9 people, figures from Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as party representatives. However, after some time, the composition of the “Karabakh” committee underwent changes, and the 11-member “Karabakh” committee: Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Babken Ararktsyan, Vano Siradeghyan, Vazgen Manukyan, Hambardzum Galstyan, Samvel Gevorgyan, Rafael Ghazaryan, Samson Ghazaryan, Aleksan Hakobyan, Ashot Manucharyan, Vano Siradeghyan, Davit Vardanyan led the independence movement.
