A San Diego Police officer, Michael Wilder, is now home with his family following a harrowing incident last Saturday, though his recovery journey is expected to be long and challenging. The incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement and the devastating consequences of driving under the influence.
The officer’s wife, Tiffany Wilder, expressed immense gratitude that her partner is alive after being struck by a DUI driver while crossing Mission Boulevard and Thomas Avenue. She shared that he is currently resting and managing significant pain, but the family is adapting to the realities of his recovery.
Details of the Collision
According to investigators, 31-year-old Anthony Robertson was driving the wrong way when he collided with two officers, including Officer Wilder. The crash occurred as Officer Wilder was returning to his patrol car.
“Being a law enforcement significant other, we don’t know if they’re ever going to come home but we always hope that they will and it just really hit me hard getting that call and just being like Oh my Gosh, this is really happening to me,” Tiffany Wilder recounted, describing the emotional impact of receiving the news from her husband’s sergeant.
Officer Wilder’s Injuries and Recovery
Officer Wilder was transported to the hospital with injuries determined to be more serious at the time. Initial medical assessments indicate he sustained a concussion, but further testing is underway to determine the full extent of his injuries.
While relieved to have him home, the Wilder family is facing a complex set of physical, emotional, and financial challenges. Officer Wilder is the sole provider for their family of four, and his inability to work – including the loss of potential side jobs and overtime – has created a significant financial strain.
“Him being out of work has caused a huge financial strain because he’s not only lost the ability to work, but he’s also lost the ability to work side jobs and overtime. We also have no family out here, so I don’t really have help,” Tiffany Wilder explained.
A Plea for Safe Driving and Community Support
Tiffany Wilder emphasized her husband’s desire to return to duty, though a timeline for his return remains uncertain. For now, the family is focused on his healing, taking things “one day at a time.” She also issued a poignant reminder about the dangers of impaired driving.
“I just want to see him happy for the holidays and I feel like with this incident, it might not be as joyful as we would want it to be,” she said, expressing concern about the upcoming holiday season. “Tiffany also wants to remind everyone to not drive under the influence because she says you never know how your decision could affect you or the lives of others.”
The San Diego Police Department has been providing substantial support to the Wilder family, including donations, meal assistance, and other forms of aid. This outpouring of support highlights the strong bonds within the law enforcement community and the broader San Diego area.
