San Jose tourism Agency Exceeds Performance Targets Ahead of Major Sporting Events

San Jose’s hospitality and tourism sector is showing strong signs of recovery,as Team San Jose – the city’s nonprofit agency dedicated to promoting local business – recently achieved meaningful improvements across key performance indicators. The positive audit results are being hailed as a promising indicator as the city prepares to host a series of high-profile sporting events in the coming years.

Audit Highlights Strong Economic Impact and Revenue Growth

The annual performance audit revealed that Team San Jose, which also manages several city-owned venues, surpassed its targets in five crucial areas: economic impact, financial performance, theater occupancy, and customer satisfaction. The City Council is scheduled to review the findings for the 2024-25 fiscal year at its meeting on January 13th.

According to a senior official, the audit results are “welcome news to everybody.” Encouragingly, overall gross revenue is trending upwards, a key metric for the association’s success.

Specifically, the audit showed Team San Jose booked 133,500 hotel room nights – 14% above target – and hosted events for 545 days, exceeding the city’s benchmark by 3%. These activities generated a total economic impact of $168.8 million, surpassing the target by 11%.

However, the organization faced scrutiny during contract renewal discussions in 2024 saw some councilmembers question the organization’s effectiveness, wiht some even suggesting a restructuring into three smaller entities, according to reports from the Mercury News. Despite these concerns, the latest audit findings have garnered praise from city leaders.

Convention Activity and Future Outlook

A councilmember expressed particular enthusiasm for the resurgence of convention activity at downtown venues. Over the past year, these venues hosted a diverse range of events, from the sold-out NVIDIA GTC tech conference to the entertainment-focused GalaxyCon San Jose comic convention.

“those are huge crucial signs, and we’ve got to figure out a way to continue that momentum,” the councilmember said.

Team San Jose’s portfolio includes the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, South Hall, the California Theater, and the San Jose Center.

While performance metrics are generally improving, some areas still lag behind pre-pandemic levels. “Gross operating results,” measuring revenue from facility operations, reached just over $6.5 million, compared to over $12 million annually prior to 2020.

Measured Optimism and Ongoing Concerns

Leah Toeniskoetter, president and CEO of the San Jose chamber of Commerce, offered a cautiously optimistic assessment of the hospitality sector’s trajectory. While acknowledging the positive trend, she emphasized that the city’s recovery is not yet complete.

“Operating costs remain high, events drawing regional audiences frequently enough do not translate into hotel rooms and midweek business travel has not fully returned, all of which continue to challenge margins and long-term planning,” Toeniskoetter explained.

LaFortune attributed the improved foot traffic to a collaborative marketing initiative involving city agencies, San Jose State University, the San Jose Downtown Association, and San Jose Mineta International Airport. Team san Jose also supported various marketing campaigns and events, including the inaugural TSJ BASH hospitality summit.

Preparing for a Landmark Year of Events

The positive audit findings coincide with San Jose’s preparations for a series of major sporting events in the coming year, including Super Bowl 60, the NCAA March Madness tournament, and the FIFA World Cup. Team San Jose is spearheading the marketing efforts for these events under the banner SJ26.

“We are primed and ready to be an activation venue for future events in 2026 and beyond,” lafortune concluded.
