A year prior, at the same race, Verstappen had put himself on the cusp of a world title with a stunning comeback victory, surging from 17th on the grid to win. While that triumph occurred in wet conditions – often leveling the playing field and creating opportunities for bold moves – Sunday’s performance unfolded on a dry track,making his ascent all the more extraordinary.
From Pit Lane to Podium Contender
Verstappen’s race began with a notable handicap: a pit lane start. this was a consequence of Red Bull‘s decision to drastically alter the car’s setup after a disappointing qualifying session, a move that violated regulations regarding modifications after qualifying has begun. Adding to the early drama, a puncture on the sixth lap forced an unscheduled pit stop, dropping him to the back of the field after having climbed to 13th position.
“Remarkable,” Verstappen himself described the situation. His performance drew high praise from rivals and team personnel alike. Antonelli, a competitor, acknowledged, “He did an amazing job.” Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies added, “Sensational.”
Battling a Lack of Pace

Beyond that, a new engine was fitted. Despite the early setback of the puncture – which, ironically, may have benefitted him by switching him to the preferred medium tire – verstappen began a relentless climb through the field.

by lap 54, with 17 laps remaining, Verstappen found himself in the lead after Norris made his final pit stop. He casually remarked over the radio, “Not bad,” upon being informed of his position.
A debate immediately arose regarding strategy. Some rival engineers believed Verstappen shoudl have attempted to defend the lead and stay out on track. They posited that an early commitment to a two-stint strategy on the medium tire could have even secured a victory. Though, Mekies disagreed, stating, “I don’t think there was any way we could have got the P1 if you just look at it.”
Andrea Stella, team principal of McLaren, echoed this sentiment, explaining, “the level of degradation was very high, and at some stage I think the tyres just ran out of rubber.” He added that Red Bull likely recognized the risk of attempting to reach the end of the race on a single set of tires, especially given they had a fresh set of softs available, making the decision to pit the correct one.
