One hundred and ten hearings, shift analysis, verification of emails and documents. The Trentino health authority found confirmation of “objective facts and a critical ward situation “ in the gynecology unit of Trento and transferred the head physician Saverio Tateo and the manager Liliana Mereu. A liberating shift for the six professionals who work in the department and who, through the lawyers Andrea de Bertolini and Andrea Manca, came forward to denounce the methods used by the two ward specialists.
Complaints about an “unbearable” situation
The commission’s decision came after the disappearance of gynecologist Sara Pedri. They verified the multiple reports on the climate of terror in the ward which, according to the family of the 31-year-old gynecologist, are at the origin of her disappearance on March 4. But well before that the Pedri case in early April, five executives and midwives (a sixth will be added later) had turned to the lawyers de Bertolini and Manca. Denouncing a situation “unbearable from a human and professional point of view”, the lawyers explain; a modus operandi made up of “mortifying harassment”, which had caused the diaspora, in the last 6 years, of 62 employees. «For years there has been a climate of suffering linked to the authoritarian methods of Tateo and Mereu. Attitudes that have gone sour ”, says Marta (real name) gynecologist like Sara. He has already told the prosecutors and the internal commission. Tiring shifts, outbursts of anger, humiliations that would not have had valid reasons. “Some people were targeted, and demotion also followed.”
“I will ruin you”
Dynamics that Sara too, in the notes found in her apartment, wrote that she had experienced. “Conduct based on often oppressive attitudes has created deep suffering in me as in many others. There were also insults and threats. I heard a nurse say: I will ruin you », continues Marta. The loss of serenity in the workplace, according to the accounts of the employees who reported it, dates back to when Tateo and Mereu started working together (“With their alignment, the climate has worsened”). «Sara – Marta reflects – had a complex impact with a difficult reality, different from what she had imagined and which was not welcoming. Nor protective as it should be towards a neo-specialist ». Pieces of a puzzle that will now also be verified in court. Four doctors have already given their version to the Prosecutor’s Office and the Order of Doctors. “The outcome of the internal investigation it does not put an end to this story, but it is something fundamental – says the lawyer de Bertolini -, we are evaluating what kind of judicial actions to undertake ». For Marta and other employees “now we turn the page, but we carry with us the suffering of these years”
