Despite reports to the contrary, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is not receiving special treatment while incarcerated at the La Santé prison in Paris, according to his legal counsel. The ex-president, sentenced to five years in prison at frist instance in a case involving libyan financing, is currently in solitary confinement due to credible death threats, his lawyer explained on Tuesday, October 28.

Speaking on BFMTV, Me Christophe Ingrain, one of Sarkozy’s lawyers, vehemently refuted claims of a preferential regime. “It’s totally false to imagine that [Sarkozy] doesn’t benefit from preferential treatment at the Santé prison,” Ingrain stated, clarifying that the situation is quite the opposite. He emphasized the severity of the conditions, stating, “Nicolas Sarkozy is in solitary confinement… and that’s not nothing: it’s reserved for the most risky detainees, that’s where we put detainees who are a threat to the rest of the detention.”
Ingrain revealed that the former president was placed in isolation “to protect him from the rest of the detention,” adding, “And it’s not a fantasy, there were death threats made against him a few days ago,” with a trial regarding those threats scheduled for December. The lawyer painted a stark picture of Sarkozy’s daily life, describing a situation where “detention is hard when you are innocent and when you are in solitary confinement. You don’t see anyone, the cell is closed all the time.” Sarkozy has reportedly even declined his allotted daily walk.
Family Visits and Ongoing Appeals
While emphasizing the harshness of the environment, Ingrain confirmed reports from RTL that Sarkozy is permitted four family visiting rooms per week at La Santé. However, he stressed that even with respectful treatment from prison staff and regular visits from lawyers and family, the overall conditions remain “extremely harsh.”
Sarkozy was convicted on September 25 of criminal conspiracy in the Libyan case and has since appealed the decision. The National financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) has also filed an appeal. A request for Sarkozy’s release has been submitted to the Correctional appeals Chamber, which has two months to deliver a ruling.
