The transfer of Indian prisoners in Saudi Arabia began

Riyadh: The process of extraditing Indian prisoners from Saudi prisons to their homeland has begun. Life imprisonment can now be served in Indian jails. The move is in line with an agreement to extradite prisoners signed 12 years ago. Accordingly, those serving prison terms in Saudi prisons will have to serve the remainder of their sentence in Indian jails.

In 2010, during the visit of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Saudi Arabia, the two countries signed a prisoner exchange agreement. Proceedings in this regard were started on the same day but the contract was delayed due to a string of procedures. But now it has taken concrete form and steps are being taken to repatriate such prisoners. The Indian Embassy has written to various prison authorities in Saudi Arabia in this regard. This benefit is available to those who are incarcerated in cases other than financial transactions or criminal offenses. According to embassy sources, the jail authorities have been asked to provide details of those who want to move to the local jail.
