A winter storm sweeping across Georgia has disrupted travel plans, and for one Savannah dentist, Dr. Roy Maynard, it nearly derailed a long-planned medical mission to provide free dental care to children in Belize. Maynard and his volunteer team faced a last-minute scramble to reroute their travel after a key connecting flight was canceled due to the inclement weather.

A severe weather system impacting the Southeastern United States created meaningful challenges for travelers this week. Dr. Maynard, owner of Georgetown Family Dental, was scheduled to depart for Belize with a team of volunteer dentists to offer crucial dental services to underserved children. However, the mission faced immediate turbulence when a connecting flight through Atlanta was canceled just one day before departure.

“This is actually remarkable for this many flights to have been canceled,” a traveler familiar with the situation stated.

For the past five years, Dr.Maynard has dedicated his time and expertise to traveling to Belize,addressing a critical need for dental care among children who often lack access to even basic preventative services. During each annual trip, the team typically treats approximately 300 children, providing essential cleanings, preventative care, fillings, and other essential procedures.

The team was forced, for the first time, to entirely overhaul their travel itinerary, securing new flights departing from Miami. This required a rapid reassessment of logistics,including the transportation of vital dental supplies and equipment within a compressed timeframe. “Navigating the logistics of transporting the supplies and making sure everyone arrives at the same time can be really frustrating,” Dr.Maynard explained.

Despite the added stress and logistical hurdles, Dr.Maynard emphasized the enduring importance of the mission. “When we get down there and see the smiles on those kids, the hugs after their cleanings – it’s all worth it,” he said.
