Savannah Guthrie Pleads for Mother’s Safe Return in Kidnapping Case
Savannah Guthrie, the prominent co-anchor of NBC News’ Today, has made a direct appeal to the suspected kidnappers of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, stating her family is prepared to meet their demands for her safe return. Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home near Tucson, Arizona, on the evening of January 31st and was reported missing the following day after failing to attend church, sparking a widespread search and investigation.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed they are treating the case as a kidnapping, though the Pima County Sheriff’s Department has yet to identify any suspects or persons of interest. The investigation gained a new dimension after a message was reportedly sent to a local television station, prompting Guthrie’s public plea.
On Saturday, February 10th, exactly one week after her mother’s disappearance, Guthrie posted a heartfelt video on Instagram alongside her siblings, Cameron and Annie. “We received your message and we understand,” she said, directly addressing those believed to be holding her mother. “We beg you now to return our mother to us, so that we can celebrate with her.”
Guthrie continued, emphasizing the family’s desperation and willingness to cooperate. “This is the only way we will have peace,” she added. “This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
The plea followed confirmation that the FBI is investigating a message received by Tucson-based television station KOLD on Friday, February 9th. Kevin Smith, a spokesperson for the FBI office in Phoenix, stated that Guthrie was referring to this communication. KOLD declined to release details of the message, citing the ongoing FBI review. The station also confirmed it was one of several news outlets, including NBC News, that received alleged ransom letters throughout the week.
NBC News has reviewed a copy of one such note, but authorities have not yet verified its authenticity.
The case remains shrouded in mystery, with Sky News’ US correspondent Martha Kelner noting the lack of leads. “This is obviously a huge mystery still,” Kelner reported, “there are no suspects and no persons of interest in this case.” She added that analysis suggests the sender or senders utilized a secure server to conceal their IP address, and the latest note appears to be intentionally crafted to demonstrate a connection to the original communication.
Investigators are actively pursuing all leads, including a search for vehicles potentially linked to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. According to NBC News, officers visited a Circle K convenience store on Friday after receiving a tip regarding a vehicle of interest and reviewed the store’s surveillance footage. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been contacted for further comment.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts to come forward. The family’s public appeal underscores the gravity of the situation and their unwavering hope for a safe resolution.
