Saxony Tennis Celebrates Championship Season, Announces Refereeing Overhaul for 2026

A vibrant summer of competition culminated in a series of awards ceremonies across Saxony in November 2025, recognizing champions at all levels of the sport. Simultaneously, the Saxon Tennis Association (STV) unveiled significant changes to its refereeing structure, prioritizing modernization and accessibility.

Honoring Successes Across Saxony

The STV honored state and district champion teams – encompassing juniors, active players, and seniors – as well as the winner of the STV club cup. The celebrations unfolded across three cities: Leipzig (November 11th & 12th), Dresden (November 12th), and Chemnitz (November 18th). According to reports from the events, winning teams received congratulations and small gifts at each location.

Focus on Collaboration and Growth

The district conferences, central to the celebrations, prioritized open dialogue with club representatives. A senior official stated that discussions centered on membership trends, competition participation, and the successes of Saxon players in 2025. The STV also expressed gratitude to all member clubs for their dedication to organizing tournaments throughout the year.

Refereeing Modernization: The End of the ‘D’ License and the Rise of the ‘LK Driving License’

Looking ahead, the STV announced a major shift in its refereeing certification process. Effective 2026, training and further education for “D” referees will be discontinued, and the corresponding license will expire. In its place, the STV will introduce the “LK driving license,” a mandatory qualification for officiating “LK” (Leistungs Klasse) tournaments beginning in 2027.

The first training course for the “LK driving license” is scheduled for April 19, 2026, in Leipzig. Notably, “LK” tournaments will still be permitted to utilize “D” licensed referees throughout 2026, providing a transition period for officials.

New Resources for Team Leaders and Players

To support game operations and minimize errors, the STV will launch a series of online information sessions via Zoom, starting on November 25, 2025, with a follow-up session planned for the end of April 2026. These voluntary sessions, designed for team leaders and other interested parties, will address common challenges encountered during team games and provide a platform for questions. The STV intends for these sessions to eventually replace the traditional “D” referee training.

AI-Powered Rule Clarification on the Horizon

The STV also previewed a new, AI-supported “rule bot” designed to assist team managers and players with interpreting competition regulations. Currently in testing and training, the bot aims to provide instant clarification of rule questions, regardless of location or time.

Looking Ahead to 2026 and Beyond

Discussions at the district conferences also touched upon the Saxon tennis year 2026 and the upcoming STV general meeting on April 18th in Leipzig. Association management anticipates presenting a proposal for contribution adjustments at the meeting. Further details from the conferences are available in the associated presentations.
