Scallop proposed to be used in dentistry

Biomaterial can be useful as material for implants

Material for reconstructive surgery from the shell of the scallop Nodipecten nodosus was obtained by NUST MISIS researchers and their foreign colleagues.

Infection of medical implants remains one of the main problems of dentists.

As MK was told at the institute, a scallop can solve the problem. Or rather, its shell, which has antimicrobial properties. On its basis, scientists have developed synthetic hydroxyapatite, which is similar in properties to hydroxyapatite (the mineral component) of bone tissue and tooth enamel.

The new substance was based on scallop shells, calcium phosphate and cetrimonium bromide. The resulting hydroxyapatite turned out to be active against the most dangerous human pathogens: Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae) and hay bacillus (Bacillus subtilis).

Studies of the toxicity of the material on Danio-rerio aquarium fish showed its absolute safety.
