Fraudsters are always coming up with new scams to trick people out of their money. We’ll show you how people are currently being ripped off.

It is a real wave of rip-offs that is currently hitting consumers. Fraudsters primarily try to gain access to sensitive data, credit cards and accounts through digital channels. You can always read about which stitch you are currently using here.

++ Disney Plus: Allegedly subscription canceled (March 26, 2024) ++

Be careful of this phishing email that is aimed at customers of the streaming service provider Disney Plus. The email consists of little text. After an impersonal salutation, you will be informed that the subscription has been canceled. A payment problem could not be resolved. The customer will then be offered to reactivate the membership by clicking on the button below labeled “Reactivate Subscription”.

Are you a Disney Plus customer? Then definitely do not click this button. The consumer advocates warn: “By clicking this button, you allow criminals to access your sensitive data, which could then be used for further data misuse. We advise you to always move such emails to the spam folder without being answered.”

++ Paypal: Apparently your account is blocked (March 12, 2024) ++

The consumer advice center is again warning of fraud in connection with the payment service provider Paypal. An email has been circulating since the beginning of the week that purports to be an official PayPal letter. The subject of the email says: “Unblock your PayPal account in accordance with the new terms and conditions.”

The email begins with a personal salutation and initially appears inconspicuous. The content points out the need for a revision of the terms of use. It is of “paramount importance” to review and update personal information to ensure the quality of the service.

You should update immediately using a button, otherwise trouble-free access cannot be maintained. Then they threaten to say: “If this important update is not made within the specified deadline, we will be forced to temporarily block your account.”

According to consumer advocates, the email can be clearly identified as phishing based on the sender address. They warn: “We advise you not to click on the button below and recommend that you immediately move such phishing emails to the spam folder without replying.”

++ DKB: Fraud with alleged credit card blocking (March 9, 2024) ++

Fraudsters are currently targeting customers of Deutsche Kreditbank (DKB), consumer advice centers report. An email informs recipients about alleged “irregular activity” on the credit card. Accordingly, cash withdrawals and payments with the card are not possible, it says.

In order to be able to use the “bank’s” services as usual again, the recipients should confirm their identity via a link. Only then will the card be activated again, it goes on to say. Consumer advocates advise: “You should under no circumstances follow this request.”

By addressing them personally and disabling the card functions, the fraudsters only wanted to unsettle the email recipients. It is a phishing message to obtain personal data.

++ Telekom: Fraud with alleged voice messages (March 5, 2024) ++

Be careful of alleged emails from Telekom: Fraudsters are apparently currently trying to lure people into a trap with a “new voice message”. In this specific case, a user of platform X alerted a t-online editor to an email that allegedly came from the mobile phone provider. It says that the person concerned received a 57-second voice message from a number with a German area code.

To listen to this alleged message, you should click on a link – which is very likely not a Telekom customer portal. The specific email was sent from “noreply@support.de”. The specified web address behind the link no longer appears to exist.

Nevertheless, caution is advised because this scam is not unknown. There have been attempts at fraud like this in the past. The criminals also posed as Telekom and sent emails with similar content.
