Egypt Braces for Rain and Rerun Elections: School Closures and Polling Preparations

Egypt is preparing for a double challenge this week: continued inclement weather and the resumption of parliamentary elections in districts where initial results were annulled. Students and parents are anxiously awaiting decisions regarding potential school closures as rain is forecast to impact multiple governorates, while electoral committees are being finalized in preparation for Wednesday’s vote.

The Ministry of Education and Technical Education has affirmed that the decision to suspend classes rests with individual governors, who will assess local conditions and prioritize student safety. While schools in Matrouh Governorate were closed Tuesday due to rainfall, an official announcement confirmed classes will resume Wednesday as the weather is expected to improve. Currently, no other governorates have officially announced school closures for Wednesday.

Widespread Rainfall Expected

A weather system is predicted to bring moderate to heavy, and potentially thundery, rainfall to ten governorates tomorrow, including Alexandria, Beheira, Kafr El-Sheikh, Dakahlia, Damietta, Port Said, Gharbia, Menoufia, Sharqia, and the Canal cities. The possibility of flash floods exists in areas of Sinai. Lighter rainfall is also anticipated in Greater Cairo, the Gulf of Suez, northern Upper Egypt, and parts of Matrouh Governorate. Wind activity is expected across much of the country.

Elections Drive School Closures in Select Districts

Separately, the rerun of House of Representatives elections in 30 districts across 10 governorates is prompting school closures. Schools housing electoral committees will be closed Wednesday and Thursday to facilitate the voting process.

Giza Governorate has confirmed its readiness, with seven districts preparing for the election. Governor of Beheira, Dr. Jacqueline Azar, stated that all electoral headquarters are fully equipped to accommodate voters, including provisions for the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Control rooms are operating around the clock to monitor the election and address any issues that may arise.

The districts requiring re-elections are spread across the country, including areas in Giza, Beheira, Fayoum, Alexandria, Minya, Assiut, New Valley, Aswan, Luxor, and Sohag Governorates. The National Elections Authority is overseeing the process, aiming for a fair and transparent outcome.

The convergence of adverse weather conditions and the critical electoral process presents logistical challenges for Egyptian authorities, requiring careful coordination to ensure both public safety and the integrity of the democratic process.
