A tragic traffic accident in Santiago’s Recoleta commune on Tuesday afternoon resulted in the death of one child and injuries to seven others after a school van was struck by a vehicle fleeing a robbery. Authorities have arrested two Chilean nationals with prior criminal records in connection with the incident.
A preliminary statement from police indicated the collision occurred after 4:00 p.m. at the intersection of Santos Dumont and Humorista Carlos Helo streets, in the Patronato sector. The school van overturned as a result of the impact, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Robbery Preceded Fatal Crash
According to Lieutenant Colonel Gabriel Villanueva of the Northern Prefecture of Carabineros, the events unfolded after two individuals committed a cell phone theft and attempted to evade capture by fleeing the scene. Civilians reportedly pursued the suspects, but during their escape, the fleeing vehicle “did not respect a yield sign and collided with the van that was transporting the students.”
“There are no more children at risk of life,” Villanueva confirmed, while noting the extent of injuries varied among those involved. The deceased has been identified as a minor.
Despite initial reports suggesting a chase, Colonel Villanueva, in charge of the procedure, clarified that the Carabineros “does not have any type of intervention in terms of monitoring or persecution” related to the initial robbery. The suspects were apprehended following the collision and are expected to be formally charged on Tuesday.
Government Expresses Condolences
The Minister of Public Security, Luis Cordero, expressed deep regret over the accident. “First of all, I want to convey my condolences and consolation to the school community of the Rafael Sanhueza school and to the families, first, of the deceased child, and secondly, of those who have been injured,” Cordero stated.
Cordero further explained that initial government findings suggest the crash occurred when a vehicle involved in a robbery with intimidation struck the school transport vehicle, which was carrying eight people at the time. The tragic loss of life underscores the devastating consequences of criminal activity and the importance of road safety.
