OUR ADVICE – To prevent sciatica from recurring, it is better to stay active! Contrary to popular belief, physical activity is always beneficial, during and after pain.

Many French people have already experienced this sharp pain that starts in the buttocks and radiates down the leg along the sciatic nerve, mainly between the ages of 35 and 50. “Of the 5 to 10 million French people suffering from low back pain, 5 to 10% have sciatica associated”, explains Professor François Rannou, professor of medicine and head of the physical medicine and rehabilitation department at Cochin Hospital (Paris).

Linked most of the time to a herniated disc, the pain is due to the compression of one of the roots of the sciatic nerve (the L5 root, between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae and the S1 root between the 5th lumbar vertebra and the 1st sacral vertebra), associated with its inflammation. It can be triggered by exertion or increased when sitting. Numbness, tingling and muscle weakness are sometimes even felt in the foot or leg.
