The Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, highlighted this Saturday from Vigo that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Innovation is preparing its appeal against the veto to bottom fishing with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), “hand in hand with science”and from his department cThey consider that “the work that was being carried out by the Spanish fishing fleet is not incompatible with sustainability and the preservation of the natural environment”.
“Again, science is working hand in hand and side by side in an interministerial manner to help our society benefit from the sea in a sustainable way, but of course it is also on the side of the fishermen and the defense of the interests of our productive sector”, stated the state representative.
In statements to the media after laying the keel of the oceanographic vessel Odón de Buenwhich is being built in the Armón Vigo shipyards, justified that the resource that the government is preparing against the resolution promoted by the European Commissioner for Fisheries, Oceans and the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevicius, which prohibits fishing at more than 400 meters in 87 areas of the Atlantic, has led to the postponement of the scientific-maritime table that was going to be held in the olive city.
“We want to reaffirm our commitment to the creation of the science and fishing table in Vigo. A pioneering initiative of many others to come” and that seeks to “bring knowledge closer to society,” Morant said in this regard. “We had announced that we were going to celebrate it in October, but this month we are not going to be able to celebrate it because of what I was commenting on,” he added in relation to the resource that the Pedro Sánchez Executive is preparing.
After emphasizing that one of the objectives of the table is to give an account of the resolutions of the European Commission and that therefore (by not agreeing) it will be postponed until knowing how the situation develops (without a specific date), he stressed that the resource is preparing with a lot of “rigor” and “precision” to “win this battle”.
