Cats, as American scientists have found, have an impressive range of expressions, using about 276 different facial expressions. About it writes “TVNZ”.
Each of these expressions involves about four of 26 unique muscle movements, such as lip curling, nose licking, half-blinking, or whisker pinching.
When compared to humans and dogs, cats exhibited more varied facial expressions than dogs, but fewer of them than humans. Humans have about 44 unique facial movements, which makes their facial expressions rich and varied. About 27 unique expressions have been found in dogs.
As the researchers noted, 45% of cat facial expressions were identified as friendly, 37% as aggressive, and the remaining 18% were identified as ambiguous. Interestingly, some of these expressions reminded scientists of human facial expressions.
