Scientists from Russia have discovered a substance in Pacific red algae that can destroy part of the HIV virus. This information was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

It is specified that the seaweed contains a large amount of carrageenan sugar. This substance can bind with particles of the human immunodeficiency virus and prevent the disease from entering immune cells.

Irina Ermak, a researcher at the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, noted that the isolated substances are not toxic.

“In small concentrations, they have high antiviral activity, including against HIV. The substance was found in algae of the Tichocarpus crinitus species, ”the specialist added.
