British scientists: oral sex increases the risk of throat cancer

Scientists from the University of Birmingham have concluded that the reason for the increase over the past 20 years in the number of cases of throat cancer may be associated with oral sex, which contributes to the transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV), writes The Conversation.

Today, in the United States and the United Kingdom, laryngeal cancer is more common than cervical cancer, British researchers shared the details. The authors of the analytical article are sure that oral sex, a very popular type of sexual contact, increases the likelihood of developing oropharyngeal cancer by 8.5 times.

It is noteworthy that HPV can be completely eliminated, but the characteristics of the immune system of some people lead to the development of cancer.

To combat the spreading risk of laryngeal cancer, researchers are reminding people to get vaccinated against the human papillomavirus. This vaccine is usually given to women in many countries to reduce the chance of cervical cancer, but research has also shown the vaccine to be effective in preventing throat cancer.
