Scientists Seek Volunteers to Study Farts with ‘Smart Underwear’

For decades, the simple act of passing gas has been shrouded in embarrassment and imprecise self-reporting. But a team of researchers at the University of Maryland is hoping to change that, one fart at a time. They’ve developed “smart underwear”—wearable technology designed to objectively measure human flatulence—and are now recruiting volunteers for a nationwide study to map the full spectrum of this often-taboo bodily function. The project, formally known as the Human Flatus Atlas, aims to establish a baseline understanding of normal gas production and its connection to gut health.

The motivation behind this seemingly unconventional research is surprisingly serious. Gastroenterologists have long struggled to address patients complaining of excessive intestinal gas, largely because of the difficulty in objectively documenting the problem. As one gastroenterologist wrote in 2000, it’s “virtually impossible for the physician to objectively document the existence of excessive gas using currently available tests.” According to the University of Maryland, this modern technology could finally provide a reliable tool for diagnosis and treatment.

Tracking the Invisible: How ‘Smart Underwear’ Works

The device, developed by a team led by Assistant Professor Brantley Hall in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at UMD, is a small, discreet sensor that snaps onto any pair of underwear. It uses electrochemical sensors to track the production of intestinal gases, specifically hydrogen. “Think of it like a continuous glucose monitor, but for intestinal gas,” Hall explained. USA Today reported that the initial “proof of concept” study, published in December, found that healthy adults pass gas an average of 32 times per day—more than double previous estimates.

These earlier estimates, researchers found, were often based on invasive procedures in small studies or, more commonly, on self-reporting. Both methods are prone to inaccuracies. Self-reporting suffers from missed events, imperfect memory, and the obvious difficulty of logging gas while asleep. The smart underwear offers a continuous, objective measurement, providing a far more accurate picture of daily flatus production.

The study isn’t just about quantifying how often people fart; it’s about understanding why. Researchers plan to correlate flatulence patterns with diet and microbiome composition. The gut microbiome—the trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that live in our digestive system—plays a crucial role in overall health, influencing everything from digestion and immunity to mental well-being. Who’s Needed for the Study?

Hall’s team is actively seeking a diverse group of volunteers to participate in the study. They’re particularly interested in individuals who fall into three categories: those who consume high-fiber diets but rarely pass gas, those who experience frequent flatulence, and those whose gas production falls somewhere in between. The wide range of individual variation observed in preliminary studies—with some participants passing gas as few as four times a day and others as many as 59—highlights the need for a large and representative sample size.

“We don’t actually know what normal flatus production looks like,” Hall said. “Without that baseline, it’s hard to know when someone’s gas production is truly excessive.” Establishing this baseline is crucial for developing effective strategies to manage and treat digestive discomfort.

The research team hopes that the data collected through the Human Flatus Atlas will not only improve the diagnosis and treatment of intestinal gas complaints but also provide valuable insights into the complex relationship between diet, the gut microbiome, and overall health. This innovative approach to a traditionally overlooked aspect of human physiology could pave the way for a more nuanced understanding of digestive health and personalized dietary recommendations.
