The nine-hole course, located in a village of the same name roughly an hour up the coast from Royal Dornoch, exists outside the typical Scottish golf tourism machine.
Once a bustling harbor town fueled by a thriving herring fishery, Lybster has seen its industry wane, but its golf course, celebrating its centennial this year, remains remarkably unchanged. There’s an honor system payment box, a simple clubhouse, and a reliance on local volunteers who maintain the bunkers and mow the greens. A cup of coffee is self-serve, and clubs are available on a no-cost loan basis – they aren’t “rented,” simply borrowed.
This is the course that Magnus Ryrie, born and raised in Lybster, grew up playing. Ryrie, whose father transitioned from fisherman to policeman as the herring fisheries declined, learned the game with hand-me-down hickory clubs.He recalls avoiding Saturday mornings as a child, as that’s when “the old men” – likely in their mid-twenties, he clarifies – returned from sea to play. After a career in the semiconductor industry, spanning the UK, Ireland, and a year in Arizona, Ryrie and his wife retired to Lybster, and he subsequently became the club secretary.
The course itself, tipping out at just over 2,000 yards, presents a unique challenge. It lacks customary length, with only par-3s and par-4s, but offers stunning North Sea views on every hole and demands strategic shotmaking. The ever-present wind adds another layer of complexity, rewarding local knowledge. The club’s logo, a puffing train engine, pays homage to the railway line that once transported herring to wider markets – a line whose path now strategically intersects several holes on the course. The clubhouse itself is the former train terminal, and the practice grounds occupy the site of the old railway turntable.
Lybster embodies golf in its most fundamental form, a sentiment that resonates deeply with purists and delights those who stumble upon it. It’s a community hub, fostering fresh air, exercise, and camaraderie. The course welcomes golfers of all ages; some of Ryrie’s childhood rivals remain members, and a newly launched junior program boasts 20 participants within a total membership of just 100.
A day pass costs a flat £30, regardless of residency or time of year. There are no inflated prices for tourists, no tiered rates, and no surge pricing.Payment is made via cash or credit card. The club’s centennial celebrations will be understated, consisting of a couple of low-key tournaments in June and a limited merchandise release featuring caps, ball markers, and headcovers.
However, Lybster is subtly increasing its visibility.A modest donation request is featured on the website, alongside an invitation to join as an overseas member for £120 (approximately $165). The goal isn’t profit maximization, but rather attracting more golfers. Visitor numbers increased from 220 in 2023 to nearly double that figure in 2025.Ryrie emphasizes the club’s aim is simply to break even, with funds raised going towards improving the junior practice grounds and upgrading the clubhouse.
This effort aligns with a broader initiative to promote “slow tourism” in the Highlands, encouraging travelers along the North Coast 500 to extend their stay beyond a speedy sprint. Lybster, with its population of 600 and breathtaking scenery, offers an ideal place to linger.
