Aston Villa’s Premier League campaign has hit a snag with a mounting injury list in midfield, casting doubt on their ability to maintain their impressive form.
- Youri Tielemans is expected to be sidelined for eight to ten weeks with an ankle injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle.
- John McGinn will be out for six to eight weeks with a knee injury, adding to the team’s midfield concerns.
- Boubacar Kamara is ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.
- Aston Villa are reportedly close to securing Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus to bolster their midfield options.
Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans will be out of action for up to ten weeks, exacerbating the club’s existing injury problems in the center of the pitch. The Belgium international, 28, suffered an ankle injury during Sunday’s 2-0 win at Newcastle and subsequent tests have revealed the severity of the issue, ruling him out until April. This latest setback adds to a growing list of absentees for Villa, currently sitting third in the Premier League.
A Cascade of Injuries
Tielemans joins teammates John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara on the sidelines. McGinn has been sidelined for two months, also with a knee injury, while Kamara’s season is over due to a separate knee issue. Manager Unai Emery acknowledged the challenging situation on Wednesday, stating, “Tielemans is eight to 10 weeks out. Kamara is not going to play this season. McGinn is six to eight weeks out.”
Emery emphasized the need for careful management of the midfield resources. “After those updates of those players we need to manage the centre midfield in the matches we are going to play,” he said.
Luiz Return on the Horizon
To address the midfield shortage, Aston Villa is nearing an agreement to re-sign Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus. Luiz previously played for Villa between 2019 and 2024. Emery described the potential move as “close,” signaling a swift attempt to reinforce the squad.
Villa will host Red Bull Salzburg at Villa Park on Thursday in the Europa League, having already secured their place in the knockout stage.
