In the framework of the 91st anniversary of his birth and as a tribute for his career in the fight for justice and social equality, the head of Government, Marti Batresunveiled the bust of the deputy Porfirio Muñoz Ledowhom he described as a leftist patriot.
“He was a citizen, because being a citizen means participating actively and with one’s own position in the controversies of the community (…) We look at the essence of people and if I had to define his, I would say that he was a democrat, a patriot, but, above all, a left-wing Republican,” he said during the ceremony at the “Enriqueta Camarillo” Park, in the Del Valle neighborhood, Benito Juárez municipality.
The president described this character as a “civic hero of the democratic struggle” in Mexico, noting that he played a key role in achieving the reforms that allowed the election of the ruler of the Mexico City in 1997.
He recalled that thanks to the work of Munoz Ledo As Secretary of Labor in the 1970s, wages peaked before this six-year term; while from 1979 to 1985 he served as Mexico’s representative to the United Nations.
“His intellectual energy and his political passion “It lasted until the last day of his life. We will always admire the eloquence, erudition and political battle that virtuously converged in Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, but, above all, his patriotism and his fight for democracy,” he said.
The secretary of Urban Development and Housing (Seduvi), Inti Muñoz, said that the Mexican artist and restorer, Arcadio Marín, who is involved in the conservation of works of Mexican sculptural heritage, participated in the creation of the bust.
The following phrase was written on the pedestal: “May the equality on which the balance of the Republic’s institutions rests today become the way of life that we pass on to future generations of Mexicans.”
